'Erika in Gesture I,' by James Cobb, Drawing
This framed 21" x 19" drawing by artist James Cobb, 'Erika in Gesture I,' captures the female model in a seated pose. The model is seated with her legs tucked under her lower body with her waist twisting behind. Her upper body, arms, and face are turned looking over her shoulder. The conte, charcoal and graphite drawing is on toned beige paper with an off-white mat and an ornate gold wooden frame. Cobb, an academic realist, uses live models to capture his figural studies and travels often to capture his vivid landscape images.
Cobb has worked out of his studio in Norman, Oklahoma for the last two decades. Until recently he maintained a studio in Taos, New Mexico. His work is executed in oil when painting and charcoal and conté when drawing. He attempts to paint from life and hosts a life drawing session every Friday for artists around the state. Cobb tries to stay true to the subject but is increasingly adding abstractions to his work. He paints all subject matter from still-life, to landscapes, portraiture, and figures.
