Charming mid-20th century wooden figurine representing a tanuki—the Japanese raccoon dog, a beloved creature in folklore. The figure wears a silk cord tied around its neck, from which a small bell is suspended. It stands atop a wooden base inscribed with Japanese characters.
In Japanese mythology, the tanuki is a well-known symbol of good fortune, merriment, and playful mischief. While regarded as a trickster and shapeshifter, it is also considered affable, absentminded, and harmless—traits that have endeared it to generations of artists and artisans. As such, the tanuki remains a favored motif in statuary, painting, and folk art.
This figure embodies some of the hasso engi (八相縁), or "eight symbolic traits," traditionally associated with tanuki statues, each conveying a distinct aspect of good luck and moral virtue: Hat – Protection from misfortune and unforeseen adversity. Large eyes – Keen awareness and the capacity for sound judgment. Broad tail – Stability and the secure conclusion of endeavors.
