Pair of Japanese dolls, attributed to the Nishi Doll Company, dating from the late 1950s to early 1960s.
The principal figure represents a Kabuki actor in the role of an oyama or onnagata—a male performer specializing in female roles—depicting an oiran, a high-ranking courtesan of the Edo period. She is accompanied by a youthful attendant, or kamuro, who appears to whisper softly to her mistress in a moment of theatrical intimacy. The iconography and sartorial elements—hairstyle, make-up, and costume—suggest a historical setting circa 1864, aligning with the twilight years of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Far surpassing the quality typical of tourist items, these dolls are executed with extraordinary precision and craftsmanship. The materials include real silk, brocaded textiles, human hair, glass eyes, and intricate gilded foil accents. The elaborate hair ornaments adorning the oiran are fashioned from genuine plate silver.
Mounted on a wooden base.
