This cylindrical vase is meticulously crafted from paulownia wood and adorned using the traditional Japanese lacquer technique known as maki-e. The design features a gold bird, a gray bamboo tree, and bamboo leaves in gold and brown, all rendered in lacquer.​

Maki-e (literally "sprinkled picture") is a Japanese decorative technique where lacquer is applied to a surface, and then metallic powders—such as gold or silver—are sprinkled over the wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Once the lacquer has dried, additional layers may be applied and polished to achieve a smooth finish, enhancing the design's depth and luster. ​
