Gallery Purchase

Inspired by Casey Gerald’s memoir of the same name “There Will Be No Miracles Here” is an ongoing collage series that reflects on the juxtaposition of memory, family, and communities within larger systems. Photocopied reproductions of Black family and community members are placed within a distressed environment of archived and found printed material and acrylic. Imagery from this latest iteration are pulled from the archives of the Farm Security Administration which was created as a result of the New Deal in 1937 as a means of combating rural poverty during the Great Depression. The images of rural early to mid 20th century Blackness reflects current day Black working class and working poor economic realities in factory, retail, the service industry as well as the gig economy. The same Black folks who bore the brunt of labor during the COVID pandemic putting their health at risk. There is an attempt in this series to balance personal moments of joy, humanity, and class solidarity against a backdrop of financial uncertainty.
