In Star, Kahraman looks to the theme of the body as she depicts an open mouth disrupted by cuts and fabric slicing through the paper. The fabric comes from different paintings of Kahraman’s that she has destroyed. The bodily distortion it creates reflects the displacement of refugee bodies and those whose voices have been silenced. In addition to personal experience, Kahraman is inspired by sources including Renaissance painting, Persian miniatures, and Art Nouveau. She is also interested in geometry and symmetry, seen in the mirrored, abstracted fabric pattern.
