Gift of John Andrew MacMahon '95
Julie Blackmon’s subjects are recreations of her experience of growing up in a large family, being a mother and photographer, and the timelessness of family dynamics. In her words: “The idea for Night Movie came to me when we were actually watching a movie outside with a projector set up. About every five seconds, one of the kids would get up to go get some more popcorn or a snack, and they’d block the screen with their silhouette. I remember thinking the way their little frames looked on the screen was way more interesting than the actual movie. And the idea of the movie screen mimicking life itself was also something I was thinking about.” Family dynamics play out in both the movie on the screen, Sound of Music, and her extended family scattered about the lawn.
