The Meiji period in Japan saw rise to more commercial goods seeing that the country had opened up to the world (it was mostly closed to all until the end of the Edo period and Commander Perry’s arrival). Old vs new and where they meet are common themes as well as flamboyance. These figures may have been modeled on European tradition.
