This print is an extremely complex woodblock carving. The subject is the engaging story of a tattooed social outcast appearing in Kabuki and Bunraku plays rinsing himself with well-water after having murdered his evil father-in-law. The print was created by Toyokuni III (Kunisada) the most popular and prolific ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period. The colors are vibrant and composed of many layers of translucent pigment.
