(...) erschlage, so erwischt er die Seele gar bald, und führe sie hin in unfern Gewalt," so antwortete der heilige Man Abraham, und sprach: "Alle ungläubigen Leute haben mich umgeben und in Gottes Namen werde ich ihm gehorchen. Sogleich als der Teufel die Worte hörte, so verschwand er, und beließ des heiligen Mannes Kammer (/kleines Kloster) noch ganz wie bevor. Dennoch aber eines Nachts als er stand auf seiner Matte (Gebetsmatte oder Türschwelle) und betete - so entzündete der Teufel die Matte, so dass sie vollständig brannte. Da trat der heilige Mann unerschrocken in das Feuer, und sprach die Worte des Propheten: "Du wirst gehen auf den Unken (Kröten oder Schlangen) und auf den Basilisken, und wirst zertreten den Löwen und den Drachen. (/ Du wirst die Schlangen und Basilisken überwinden und du wirst den Löwen und Drachen zertreten)." Das hat was das teuflische Feuer erloschen. Da fluchte der Teufel, und sprach: "Ich verschwinde nie wieder, ich find und erdenk die List, womit ich dich lästerlichen töte, so dass du mich mit nur so lästerliche verschmachtest." Und dennoch aber eines Tages als der heilige Abraham zu Vesperzeit (Zeit des Abendgebets) aß, so kam der Teufel als ein kleines Kind, und stand vor ihm und Griff ihm an die Schüssel, als ob er sie umwerfen wolle. Da griff der heilige Mann auch daran, und hob sie hoch und aß für sich ohne Furcht, und er schieg, wann er wollte sein Schweigen nicht (...)

(...) slay, and he will soon catch the soul, and lead it away into proximate violence (/power)," answered the holy man Abraham, and said: "All unbelieving people have surrounded me, and in God's name I will obey him. As soon as the devil heard the words, he disappeared, leaving the holy man's chamber (/small monastery) as before. Nevertheless, one night when he was standing on his mat (prayer mat or doorstep) praying, the devil set fire to the mat so that it burned completely. Then the holy man fearlessly stepped into the fire and spoke the words of the prophet: "You will walk on the toads (/snake) and on the basilisk, and you will trample the lion and the dragon. (/ You will overcome the serpents and basilisks and trample the lion and dragon)." That is what put out the devilish fire. Then the devil cursed and said: "I will never disappear; I will find and devise the trick with which I will kill you blasphemous so that you will devour me very blasphemously." And yet one day, as Saint Abraham was eating at vespers (the time of evening prayer), the devil came as a little child and stood before him, grabbing at his bowl as if to knock it over.
