Artist: Victor Vasarely (Hungarian, 1906-1997)
French-Hungarian artist. Accredited to be the grandfather of the Op Art movement, beginning to produce work that played with movement and illusions as early as the 1930s. The artist received formal training at Muhely Academy in Budapest and was interested in a merging of science and art, which can be identified in his kinetic paintings. Following 1965, when Vasarely was included in MoMA’s The Responsive Eye exhibition, Vasarely has been widely celebrated and internationally recognized for his contributions to the Op Art movement.
