Artist: Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong (Mexican, British, and American, b. 1970)
British-Mexican-American photographer. Born in Mexico City in 1970, Leong spent his childhood between Mexico, Britain, and the United States and is currently based in Los Angeles and New York. He studied at the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California), received a BA in photography from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, and continued to receive a MA degree from Harvard University in 1998. Leong’s work examines urban landscapes through photography. He is well known for his collections titled “History Images,” “Horizons,” and “Cities,” each of which focuses on the earth’s terrain as, erased by progress (History Images), natural and urban landscapes (Horizons), urban constructions (Cities). In 2023, Leong and his collaborator, writer Judy Chui-Hua Chung, won the design competition for the Memorial to the Victims of the 1871 Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles.
