  • Artist: Pieter the Elder Bruegel (Flemish, d. 1569)

Flemish painter, draftsman, and printmaker. He is a member of an important Netherlandish family, and became a master in the painters Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. After, he became associated with an Antwerp publishing house known as Hieronymus Cock where he created prints based on a range of subject matter including landscapes and peasant scenes. He was a pioneer in making both types of subjects the focus in large paintings.
