Artist: Philip Guston (American, 1913-1980)
Guston was initially a social realist mural painter in the 1930s. His style then evolved into abstract expressionism, which he evoked through light touches. In the 1960s, he felt the need to move away from abstractions and worked in a realist cartoon style, exploring the upheaval of the time. These works were not received well by the art community, which isolated the artist from the epoque.
