Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, 1839-1906)
French painter from the post-impressionist era. Cezanne studied painting and drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts. He enrolled in law school in 1856, pursuing both law and art at the same time. He later pursued artistic studies at the Académie Suisse. Cezanne's work laid the foundations for the transition from the 19th-century art to the radically different era of art in the 20th century. His work is characterized by a use of planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields.
