Artist: Patrick Procktor (British, 1936-2003)
British artist. Born in Dublin, but moved to London when his father died in 1940. Unable to attend university because of insufficient income, Procktor was conscripted into the Royal Navy where he learned to speak Russian and began working as an interpreter. Began painting and drawing in his spare time and eventually was accepted by the Slade School of Fine Art in 1958. First solo show at Redfern Gallery in London in 1963 and was later featured in Bryan Robertson’s exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery. Best known for works made with oils, acrylics and watercolor that drew on pop art as inspiration and his travels in Italy, Greece, India and many other places. Elected as part of the Royal Academy in 1996.
