Artist: Natvar Bhavsar (Indian, b. 1934)
Indian painter, abstract expressionist and color field artist raised in western India and currently based in NYC. Bhavsar attended Gujarat University in Ahmedabad and America at University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Fine Arts where he received his Master of Fine Arts. He taught painting at the University of Rhode Island. His paintings have been influenced by his childhood in India, specifically his memories of being surrounded by vivid textiles, practicing rangoli, and witnessing the Holi Festival. These childhood experiences in India mixed with his adulthood in New York in the 1960s and ’70s has resulted in many powerful, cross-cultural works.
