Artist: Michael Peel (British, 1940-2017)
British printmaker and photographer. One of a generation of artists who saw art as mechanism for social change, to reveal hidden iniquities of contemporary society. Combined texts excerpts and grainy imagery culled from tv and print to represent social and political excesses endured by the everyday person. Found photography appropriate for easy accessibility by the public. Works were influenced by idealism of post-WWII period; hedonism of 1960s; hardened realities of political and social upheavals of 1970s-90s; and dawn of informational age and with that chaos, uncertainty and insecurity. Taught alongside his practice, redefined role of printmaking in high art.
