  • Artist: Max Weber (American, 1881-1961)

Russian-American painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Weber helped introduce Fauvism and Cubusim into the United States through his early abstract works. He studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Henri Matisse, and is associated with Henri Rousseau and Pablo Picasso. His work was exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz's "291" gallery, and he is best known for his Fauvist-inspired painting The Geranium (1911) and synthetic cubist Chinese Restaurant (1915). His work became more representational later in his career but maintained its exploration of color and form.
