Artist: Maud Gatewood (American, 1934-2004)
American artist. Gatewood is a North Carolina-based artist, painter, teacher, activist and staunch individualist. She has dedicated much of her funds to the Weatherspoon Art Museum and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She earned her master's degree from Ohio State University in 1955, and won a Fulbright in 1963 to study under painter, Oskar Kokoschka. Her work is experimental and plays with multiple styles and mixed media, and many are imbued with a sense of ambiguity in the relationships between figures.
