  • Artist: Master H. L. (German)

Master H.L. (German, active ca. 1511–1533) is the notname of an anonymous Upper Rhine artist, identified by the monogram “HL.” Active as both a sculptor and printmaker, he is associated with the monumental high altarpiece in St. Stephen’s Minster, Breisach (ca. 1523–26), and with a group of finely hatched devotional engravings and woodcuts dated between 1511 and 1533. His works include religious reliefs such as a Coronation of the Virgin and prints like Two Angels with a Peapod (1533). Stylistically, his art bridges late Gothic carving and early Renaissance print culture, and he has at times been confused with contemporaries such as Hans Leinberger.
