  • Artist: Liliane Lijn (American, b. 1939)

American-born artist who was the first woman artist to work with kinetic text. Her work is known for its explorations into light, movement and text through her 'Poem Machines'. Lijn is also recognized for pioneering the interaction of art, science, technology, eastern philosophy and female mythology. She self-describes her work as "a constant dialogue between opposites, [her] sculptures use light and motion to transform themselves from solid to void, opaque to transparent, formal to organic.’ Her formal training included studying archaeology at the Sorbonne, and Art History at the Ecole du Louvre, in Paris.
