  • Artist: Kiki Smith (German-American, b. 1954)

Born in Nuremberg, Germany but moved to South Orange, New Jersey when she was a baby. Was mostly self-taught but studied at Hartford Art School briefly. Later moved to New York City and became a part of the Downtown arts scene alongside artists such as David Hammons and Jenny Holzer. Best known for representations of mortality, abjection and sexuality. Uses a number of different disciplines including tattooing, drawing, sculpture, photography and printmaking to create works relating to the human condition. Works reside at institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Currently active in New York City.
