Artist: John Edward Heliker (American, 1909-2000)
American painter. Based in New York. Inspired by European paintings, working in landscapes as well as portraits. He studied and worked with many notable contemporaries such Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. In 1951, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to paint in Italy, a working experience during which his works moved towards abstraction. He had accomplished many solo exhibitions in New York and at the Kraushaar Galleries, and he was a professor of art at Columbia University for 27 years.
