Artist: Jean Sariano (French, b. 1943)
French painter and printmaker. Escaped the Algerian Revolution on a cargo ship with his family in 1956 to Vichy, France. Studied in Paris at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts and met with Duchamp, Poli and other artists. He worked as a janitor to fund his studies in Paris. Moved to New York in 1969 where he experimented with etching techniques. Inspired by Walt Disney characters created by 20th century animators, vibrant colors found in Aztec artistry, ancient Egyptian and Greek art forms, Cubism, and geometry.
