Artist: James Arliss Bumgardner (American, 1935-2015)
American painter. Bumgardner began painting when he was 10 years old. He went to a Catholic art school and later studied at The Virginia Commonwealth University's painting and printmaking department. He painted abstractly for about 25 years, then transitioned to the subject matter of interior imagery including empty rooms, white rooms, and later included objects such as animals jumping across the rooms. Bumgardner also painted window scenes focused the sky, water and earth. He switched from oils to soft pastels and watercolor in a series of "River Window" paintings at the Page Bond Gallery in Richmond. He has also exhibited in New York, Washington and California.
