Artist: Jacques Villon (French, 1865-1963)
French painter. Born Emile Méry Frédéric Gaston Duchamp, brother of the renowned Marcel Duchamp. Worked as a draughtsman in Paris while contributing to the magazines Le Chatnoir, Gil Blas, Lassiette au Beurre and Le Courrier Franqais. Was a founding member of the Salon d’Automne and exhibited in the International Exhibition of Modern Art (the Armory Show) in New York. Won numerous awards and prizes such as the Grand Prix for graphic art in Lugano, the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh, and the Grand Prix for painting at the Twenty-eighth Biennale in Venice. Honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters in the United States. Known primarily for analytical cubism, landscapes, and abstractions.
