Artist: Jack Levine (American, 1915-2010)
American painter. Lithuanian-Jewish descent. Early works reflect Old Master style of painting that then shifted into social realism around the same time as the WPA’s Federal Art Project was formed in 1935. Subjects include the socially and or politically oppressed, other members of the social fabric, and bitingly satirical commentaries on contemporary issues. Paintings are stylistically rooted in German Expressionism and distorted reality expressed by El Greco.
