Artist: Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954)
French painter, illustrator, sculptor, and graphic artist. Matisse studied art at the Académie Julian (1891) and then at the École des Beaux-Arts (1892). Subject matter of his work includes landscapes, still lifes, portraiture, domestic and studio interiors, and a focus on the female figure. Much of his work utilizes bright colors and sweeping brushstrokes, though he also experimented with pointillism, pencil drawings, and sculpture. He participated in many artistic movements including Neo-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism. He is known for many works, including Woman With a Hat (1905) and Dance (1910).
