Artist: George Luks (American, 1867-1933)
American realist painter and illustrator. Part of the Ashcan School of American art and a member of "The Eight", a group of painters led by Robert Henri who opposed the conservative National Academy of Design. "The Eight" sought a new style of painting that reflected the modern age and shunned traditional genteel subject matter. Luks produced genre paintings of urban subjects that exemplify the style of "Ashcan art".
