Artist: Daniel Brustlein (American, 1904-1996)
French-American cartoonist and illustrator. Brustlein was born in the Alsatian town of Mulhouse in 1904. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and later became a US citizen in 1933. Brustlein was first recognized as an illustrator and later, a painter. As an illustrator, he worked for several publications including The New Yorker where he created cartoons signed under the name “Alain.” He is known for his use of dramatic color, flat formal shapes and the figure.
