Artist: August Robert Birmelin (American, b. 1933)
American artist born in New Jersey. Known for scenes of New York city crowds. Birmelin studied at The Cooper Union, The Slade School of Art at The University of London, and recieved his BFA and MFA from Yale. Birmelin has had 49 solo exhibitions and his work is in numerous public collections including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, and the Hirshorn Museum. Additionally, he has received numerous grants and awards from such organizations as The American Academy in Rome, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the American Institute of Arts & Letters.
