Artist: Aristides Demetrios (American, 1932-2021)
American sculptor raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Son to parents George Demetrios, a classical sculptor, who studied under Bourdelle, a student of Auguste Rodin; and Virginia Lee Burton, author and illustrator of children's books. Demetrios graduated from Harvard College in 1953; served as an officer for three years in the US Navy; studied art and sculpture at the George Demetrios School from 1956 to 1959; and studied architecture at the University of California School of Architecture in 1959. Demetrios has completed many public memorial sculptural commisisons including The White Memorial Fountain: Mem Claw (1963) on the Stanford University campus; Wind Harp (1967) in San Fransisco; and the Bataan War Memorial on the island of Corregidor. Since the late 20th century he designed, fabricated and installed a large number of commissioned works for the gardens of private collectors.
