Artist: André Masson (French, 1896-1987)
French painter, sculptor, illustrator, designer, and writer. Masson studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, then moved to Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts (1912-1914). His paintings cover a wide range of subject matter, including forests and landscapes, card players, still life, metamorphoses of humans and animals, themes of germination, massacre, and combat (with emphasis on violence and eroticism), Spanish bullfights, and some abstract works. He participated in the Surrealist movement in the 1920s. He is known for Pedestal Table in the Studio (1922).
