Paintings printed on t-shirts
Fulton Leroy Washington—also known as MR. WASH—specializes in photorealistic paintings of people experiencing strong emotions. Imprisoned for a nonviolent drug offense in the 1990s, he taught himself to paint by creating artworks that depicted the troubles and sorrows of his fellow inmates. In 2014 he painted an image of President Barack Obama granting him clemency. In 2016 the painting became a reality when the president commuted his sentence. (The image of the artist sitting on a chair, seen here on a t-shirt, is excerpted from that artwork.) Now based in Compton, California, he continues to create art. In February 2024 he will hold his first solo exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles. By exhibiting his paintings on shirts purchased from his online store, we hope to highlight the way we all share our emotions and allegiances with the community around us through the things we choose to buy and wear.
