Artist statement:
When we talk about protecting our desert lands, we often discuss iconic species like the desert tortoise or bighorn sheep, but there are a host of other species that may not get the limelight but are important contributors to the ecosystem. Take the Screwbean Mesquite for instance. It’s found throughout our desert southwest. Not the most abundant, nor the showiest, but its unique screw-like seed pods provide resources for a host of species. Sadly, it is in decline. In a recent study, it was determined it is now present in 55% of its former range.
