This piece was painted in my Tucson AZ studio, soon after I returned from living in SMA, Mexico in 1999. This piece is painted on canvas with grommets so it can be hung on the wall like a tapestry. I have been thinking about stretching this painting on stretcher bars to make it easier to hang, but the piece would lose a lot of information around the edges so I haven't done it yet, but know that it is a possibility. I need about 3 inches all around the edges to stretch it. I have only recently decided to put this up for sale.
This piece was featured/published in the book "100 Artist of The Southwest" 2006
I was inspired by a game booth at a local feria in el campo on the outskirts of San Miguel De Allende, MX. I took a photo of it and kept it in my mind as a seed for the basis of a future painting. I had always wanted to include the imagry of the little supersticious powders and potions that you could buy at local herberias to heal any ailment or grant any wish.
This piece is about the game of life. About Good vs Evil. The person on the left aspires to evil and power, with the symbolism of shotguns on the table in front of him, presenting to the customer to use force and power to shoot and win the prize. "Juega Con La Tentacion" Play with Tempation" and you'll be rewarded with "Fuerza, Dinero, Fama" / Power, Money, Fame and all the items behind him such as success, protection, and influence.
The man on the right (actually the twin) aspires to good, hence the halo's on the table in front of him for customers to use -a ring-toss game of strategy and chance to win the prize. "Siempre Tienes Opciones" You always Have Options. You'll be rewarded with "La Vida Eterna" Eternal Life and all the things behind him like guidance, health, family and friends.
In life we are presented with the duality of choice and decisions and desires every day.
