Kory Kang Lee's 'Ohne Titel KKL-03' is a part of his new 'Linear' collection. These pieces, capturing life's moments in simple two-dimensional forms, are not just visually striking but also evoke a deep emotional response from the viewer, thanks to Lee's precise manipulation of contrast and composition.
As a multi-disciplinary artist, Lee works across both traditional mediums and new media. Lee starts with a series of sketches and maquettes (either small paintings or digital sketches) to develop and refine his concept in this new collection. Once happy with the direction of the work, although the intention is always to create a set of limited edition prints, he will create a reference image. In the case of the untitled series ("Onhe Titel KKL-X"), Lee develops sketches that are further refined until a final conceptual work is created. This originating work is then digitally recreated to a source for the edition. The print is then created using Lee's chosen format. The original work is never for sale and remains in the artist's collection.
The Linear series is printed to a layer of canvas using synthetic polymer and sublimation dye and then attached to a deep box stretcher frame edged in black. This piece is part of a limited edition of ten with one artist's proof, each hand-signed, numbered, and titled on the back by Lee, with a publisher's stamp from Studio Lumos, Singapore. The artwork was first previewed in a group show in December 2023 and again in a solo exhibition as the edition was officially launched as part of the "Linear Collection" in April 2024.
Lee's artistic style, influenced by his background as an illustrator, is a blend of minimalist and geometric abstraction. His work, with its emphasis on simplicity, pure form, and a restrained colour palette, creates spatial depth and invites viewers to contemplate perspective and depth of field. Lee's visual language, reminiscent of minimalist and geometric abstraction movements, draws parallels with artists like Josef Albers and Sol LeWitt. His work, known for its clean lines, monochromatic schemes, and harmonious colours, intentionally directs focus to the shapes, creating a cohesive composition that is both accessible and engaging.
