Peter Hickey
Australian b. 1943
Peter Vernon Hickey was born in Sydney on 29 July 1943 and is a painter, printmaker, teacher and master printer. He studied at the National School of Art, Royal Art Society of NSW, Heatherly School of Fine Art London, Morley College London, and Atelier Gaston Petit, Tokyo. In 1974, he was elected to the British Printmakers Council. From 1992 to 1993, he was an Artist in Residence at the Kala Institute, San Francisco.
Hickey is best known for his etchings and monotypes and has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions since 1974. In particular, his aquatints (an intaglio printmaking technique, a variant of etching that produces areas of tone rather than lines) recall the atmospheric prints of Sydney Long (1871 - 1955) in both subject and technique. Using landscape as an anchor for his images, Hickey has written of his etchings as "...a portrayal of an emotion experienced while viewing the landscape rather than a figurative representation."
