Lenn Holland
South African, b. 1970
Lenn Holland is a contemporary visual artist whose photographs capture the sense of transience and the poetry of isolation. Holland's photography, which has a keen eye for composition, frequently contrasts nature's eternal vitality with man's transitory creations.
In his striking landscapes and honest photographs, Holland delivers an evocative study of mute beauty, abandonment, and obsolescence. The vibrant yellow of a retired train carriage, now succumbing to rust and the environment, contrasts dramatically with the pristine blue sky of his peaceful settings.
Holland's process is centred on his choice of composition and shape. The decision to centre an object in the frame emphasises the subject's solitude, while the horizon's parallel lines drive the viewer's eye into the image's heart, inviting reflection on the artist's voyages and the relentless march of time.
Educated in fine art and illustration, Holland's career took a decisive turn toward the lens-based medium after a formative encounter (exploring the continent in his early years) with the desolate beauty of his home's industrial and, at times, breathtaking landscape in South Africa. This was the start of a life-long examination of the areas where human activity connects with the natural world and then retreats, leaving a canvas for the artist's sight.
Holland's photography has been shown in several galleries and exhibition spaces in Johannesburg and Singapore, and his evocative representations of modern ephemera have won him a notable reputation among his peers as a travel and fine art photographer.
His images are a visual meditation on the themes of loss, remembrance, and the undeniable beauty of the natural world. Holland allows the observer to experience these abandoned places' peaceful dignity and find beauty in their isolation with each shot.
