Japan b. 1990
Avant-garde Japanese artist "Kabukichō", born in 1990, is a multi-disciplinary new media artist best known for digital artwork.
Born and raised in the pulsating heart of Tokyo's red light district, Kabukichō has always been captivated by the city's relentless energy and the ever-changing tapestry of its streets. The neon-lit nights, the fleeting moments captured in the urban landscape, and the transient beauty of the city's architecture have been the primary muse for Kabukichō's artistic pursuits.
Kabukicho's journey into the realm of visual arts began with a deep fascination for street and experimental photography, a passion that has since evolved into a unique blend of digital artistry and traditional photographic techniques mixed with painting, illustration and using traditional mediums and unconventional tools in new ways to create a distinctive "hybrid approach" to the artists practice.
Kabukichō, proudly identifying as non-binary or 私 (watashi, including pronouns of they/them), uses art as a means of exploring the beauty in both the urban and natural world, creating artworks that are typically characterised by a minimalist aesthetic that abstracts the urban landscape, capturing fleeting moments and transient memories through experimental photography and digital manipulation. Kabukichō's artistic practice is rooted in minimalist abstraction, with influences from artists like Donald Judd and Agnes Martin, yet innovatively incorporates new media to create otherworldly visions that are hauntingly familiar and intriguingly abstract.
The artist has a keen interest in social causes and often focuses the subject of an artwork or series on social issues, particularly addressing issues and raising awareness around events that have impacted the artist and their community.
As a visual artist, Kabukichō continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art, bridging the gap between traditional minimalist abstraction and the dynamic possibilities of new media. Kabukichō's work reflects a deep connection to the urban surroundings and a relentless pursuit of artistic innovation. Through art, Kabukichō invites us to see the world anew, find beauty in the transient, and appreciate the transformative power of art in capturing the essence of our existence.
