David Rankin
Australian b. 1946
Renowned self-taught Australian artist David Rankin borrows from a wide range of influences to create his abstract paintings. Early works from the late 1960s and 1970s bear aesthetic affinities to the symbolic patterns found in Aboriginal dot painting. In the 1980s, Rankin moved to New York and began to favour looser, more fluid brushstrokes reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. He has also painted expressionistic portraits, including works created to illustrate multiple books by his wife, author Lily Brett. Brett’s experiences as a Holocaust survivor inspired Rankin to create a body of work reflecting on Jewish themes. In 1983 he won the prestigious Wynne Prize, awarded annually by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Rankin’s works are held in important national collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia, among others. In 2005, a retrospective of Rankin’s work toured galleries across the country.
