From the Artist: This quilt came from a photograph I took while in Japan and a talk given by the poet Gary Snyder. He spoke of a tradition in Japan in which priests re-light the fires at the temples for the New Year. He said that people come to the temples with sticks or straws and light them, taking them home for a good year. I envisioned the temple gate lit by the firelight in the brazier. I manipulated the photo then printed it with fiber-reactive dye.
