While preparing the installation The Hearing for exhibition at Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland, RoCoCo began to compose a series of wall works that expand upon the piece’s message. Using quotes and phrases that are familiar, famous, or even infamous on which to base this series, they continue to explore the nuances of the ideas layered in the installation. A selection of this series was chosen to display as part at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles during RoCoCo's residency in the Maker Space (October-December 2017).
These works hold a presence that goes beyond the subtlety delivered through the sculptural installation. The wall works are referred to as collage/paintings as they are constructed from cut and combined pieces collaged together, but also composed in a very painterly manner, using texture, color, and light in order to complete each piece.
