Rebecca Herman and Mark Shoffner have been artistic collaborators since 1999, creating
sculptures and installations incorporating textiles, wood and other media. We have been based in San Francisco since 2013, and we moved to the Bay Area after living in New York City from
1996-2013.
We often work in natural materials, including textiles, wood, bamboo, paper, and reclaimed
materials. As collaborators, we have created sculptures for numerous temporary exhibitions both
indoors and outdoors, including at Lacawac Sanctuary, in Lake Ariel PA; McCarren Park and
Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, NY; Evergreen House at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore;
Carving Studio & Sculpture Center in Vermont; and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
In addition to several residencies at Lacawac Sanctuary, we have also developed new work as
artists-in-residence at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio, Japan; Contemporary Art Center,
Woodside, NY; Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, Platte Clove, NY; and Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council.
Over the past 20 years, we have gained considerable experience working with different
audiences, colleagues, sites, and partners—as well as working in challenging public
environments. We plan to continue as artistic collaborators, which has worked well for our
sculptures; we are also a married couple and are committed to a long-term collaboration.
