Colloquially known as the rain crow, one might hear the Yellow-billed Cuckoo’s drawn-out knocking call in response to thunder. A sighting of the cuckoo is a reward for the patient or the lucky; the bird favors sitting still as you pass by, and so it is often overlooked. After years of bird watching, I’ve entertained the thought that I will only see a cuckoo when the cuckoo allows itself to be seen - and we regard each other in silent mutual curiosity.
My work focuses on the native flora and fauna of Wisconsin’s natural communities. I celebrate the unique role of a species within its ecosystem, along with the wealth of stories told within the natural world. In the tradition of natural history illustration, I maintain fidelity to an accurate representation of my subjects. I also seek to communicate the sense of wonder that nature inspires within us. Observing and discovering nature deepens our connection with the world and our place within it.
