Handle with Care
- Mixed media (shattered maneki-neko figure, steel wire, upcycled medical tubing, air-dry clay, gold paint, confetti, ribbon, cloth strips, tissue paper)
- 24 x 18 in
- Emmalee Pearson
The theme of the show really resonated with me, as I was already considering participating with a different piece - but then opportunity knocked. Or, was delivered rather. A friend and former employer sent me a "good fortune cat" from our old office, as she was moving. It was
something I had talked my way into our possession from a restaurant we frequented at the time. However, I knew upon lifting the delivery box that the ceramic sculpture was broken. It sounded like a wind chime was inside! Not wanting to throw it away, I tucked away the pieces - knowing they could still find purpose, even if unintended.
Now, I'm highlighting the fragility of life by essentially making golden maneki-neko roadkill. Existence is precious, and we must proceed with caution in order to advance without injury. Being too rigid will lead to cracking or collapse.
Another dimension can literally be added by scanning the QR code with a compatible device. The augmented realty (AR) caution tape can be place before this piece, or within any environment as a reminder to be careful.
Bio:
Hello! I'm a mixed media artist that's alway's experimenting with new ways of self-expression and storytelling. I've been teaching for nearly 22 years, 19 of which have been full-time in video and audio production at a local college. Prior to that, I taught for corporations large and small - specializing in a wide array of creative problem-solving solutions. I enjoy how animation and motion design can allow for art to evolve over time - literally!
I'm an artist that tends to be interested in everything. Painting, sculpting, typography, AR/VR, even building giant puppets for theater. Old school special effects in film - like stop motion and shadow puppetry - are a major influence too. I find inspiration in art, nature, and my students.
