Flight of Shadows is a 5x6 foot oil on canvas created through Raj’s signature twine painting method. Strands of twine act as extensions of the body, translating rhythmic movement into tactile texture. Against a luminous, electric yellow ground, sweeping arcs of deep black are pulled through viscous oil, creating a dynamic choreography. Resonating with Lorna Simpson’s explorations of mark-making as a residue of action, the painting prioritizes the trace of motion over literal representation. Ultimately, the work serves as a meditation on dualities—light and shadow, presence and absence—using the unpredictable nature of twine to capture fleeting, atmospheric tension.
