Light is a constant source of fascination and inspiration for me. Dancing light on moving water is endlessly challenging to convey. The ocean's shore is also my place of refuge and reflection. It often feels like my church...holy and sacred. On its shores I stand in awe of the majesty and humbled by its power and ceaselessness. Spiritual light is deeper and more subtle, but it's part of the experience.
In this piece a tree stands in a precarious setting...perched on the edge, alone, and vulnerable. Yet it hangs on, despite evidence of hardship. The leaves show strain and perhaps entering a season where loss (of its leaves) and a season of harder times and potential storms lies ahead. Yet it leans out seeking light, That light is apparent with hints of it's presence behind the looming clouds, yet it is still hidden. There is hope but no breakthrough for the moment.
There are times in life where we can expect similar circumstances for ourselves. Hope, faith, perseverance get us through these moments.
This painting is one of a series of paintings with that kind of theme. The series is evolving, but Seeking Light at the Shore seems an appropriate title. They are my attempt to convey that feeling I have when I head to the shore seeking a deeper connection with myself and the world around me. I hope they capture the beauty of those moments in some way.
