A portrait wholly from life, thanks to Ian's patience, in the "Zorn" palette of black, white, ochre and red, and currently in display in the National Portrait Gallery of Australia in the Darling Portrait Prize.
Ian is a fascinating character, and it was a pleasure painting him. Over the sittings, I discovered a few things about Ian; from his youthful exploits - cycling across the nullabor plain in his teens, to catching and relocating snakes for friends and his love of the bush.
However these couple of events are merely the tiniest of snippets.
If a portrait was just about listing a few icons about a person, there wouldn't be any need to paint a portrait, a couple of bullet points would be sufficient. I have tried to create an image that hints at Ian's character, whilst hopefully creating a sense of fascination and curiosity.
